The English Department plans to have its 100 and 151 courses in front of the Curriculum Committee in the next three weeks. The Science Department may hold back on an LAC course for a while. There was a discussion of the Freshman Seminar. All agreed that looking at a written version of the past LAC Committees proposal for the Seminar would be helpful. Several suggestions about models surfaced as well, including the University of Minnesota-Morris Freshman Seminar, or some kind of research emphasis within the course to complement the Universitys existing Undergraduate Research Conference. All agreed that we will need approximately 16 sections of the Seminar next year, to serve our first-year students. We hope that faculty throughout a variety of Departments will volunteer to teach the course. There were questions about which particular prefix would be applied to the course, and how FTE would be measured, per Department, with regard to enrollments in the Freshman Seminar. Corey Butler, Lyn Brodersen, Linda Nelson, and Maria Brandt all expressed interest in teaching a section of the Freshman Seminar. Many on the Committee expressed that they plan to attend the November 14 critical thinking seminar hosted by Lori Witthaus, as they are interested in how that particular component of the course will be shaped. Some discussion of double dipping occurred as well. The new legislation that holds baccalaureate awards to 120 credit hours will have an impact on the LAC; we must consider the need for courses to count toward different outcomes. The Committee held a discussion about the importance of transparency for the LAC process. We agreed that all forms and minutes should be posted to the LAC website, so that our University community will be well-informed of our progress. Rhonda Bonnstetter and Winston Gittens will provide interested faculty with assistance to develop rubrics/assessments for proposed LAC courses that will move to Curriculum Committee by January. All courses proposed for the LAC must come through the LAC Oversight Body. Corey Butler and Lyn Brodersen will provide an initial review of proposals, and will ask the proposing faculty for additional clarification prior to the LAC Oversight Body meeting if necessary. Corey will speak with Dan Kaiser to prepare the necessary proposal forms for LAC courses. He will ask Dan to organize a website to include all documents. Maria Brandt volunteered to post documents to this website. Lyn will ask the ALS Chairs to communicate with faculty about the importance of submitting proposals for LAC courses. Corey commented on research he had been doing regarding critical thinking skills. He referenced Derek Boks 2006 work, Our Underachieving Colleges, and a longitudinal study by Lehman and Nisbett (1990) that indicates the most significant gains in undergraduate critical thinking skills come from active learning environments and problem solving. Further discussion centered on rubrics and assessment. How do we assess progress in the LAC during the freshman year? There was also the question of how the Contemporary Issues Seminar will be assessed, as well as the need for placing the Contemporary Issues Seminar in its proper context vis a vis the 120 credit baccalaureate requirement. The Committee also will need to take up the issue of transfer students; we will do so as an agenda item at one of our November meetings. Finally, the Committee agreed that the LAC Course Proposal Form was acceptable in its format. Gehle moved and Baker seconded to accept the form as proposed by Dan Kaiser. The Committee voted unanimously to accept the LAC Course Proposal Form. It will be posted to the LAC Oversight Body website after discussion with SMSUFA President Jan Loft and the Executive Committee. The Committees next meeting will be held on Thursday, November 5. The only agenda item will be a discussion of potential models for the Freshman Seminar. The Committee adjourned at 9:30 am. The LAC Oversight Body will meet weekly, on Thursdays at 8:30 am, until further notice. #$NO* e n u i]k;<OPXZho]h hfhf.hjK%hGhQRmhQRmhQRmCJaJhQRmhbYCJaJhQRmhGCJaJ($?NOp i<0 $da$gdQRm21h:pbY/ =!"#$% j 666666666vvvvvvvvv666666>6666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666hH6666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666662 0@P`p2( 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p8XV~ OJPJQJ_HmH nH sH tH J`J bYNormal dCJ_HaJmH sH tH DA D Default Paragraph FontRiR 0 Table Normal4 l4a (k ( 0No List PK![Content_Types].xmlj0Eжr(΢Iw},-j4 wP-t#bΙ{UTU^hd}㨫)*1P' ^W0)T9<l#$yi};~@(Hu* Dנz/0ǰ $ X3aZ,D0j~3߶b~i>3\`?/[G\!-Rk.sԻ..a濭?PK!֧6 _rels/.relsj0 }Q%v/C/}(h"O = C?hv=Ʌ%[xp{۵_Pѣ<1H0ORBdJE4b$q_6LR7`0̞O,En7Lib/SeеPK!kytheme/theme/themeManager.xml M @}w7c(EbˮCAǠҟ7՛K Y, e.|,H,lxɴIsQ}#Ր ֵ+!,^$j=GW)E+& 8PK!Ptheme/theme/theme1.xmlYOo6w toc'vuر-MniP@I}úama[إ4:lЯGRX^6؊>$ !)O^rC$y@/yH*񄴽)޵߻UDb`}"qۋJחX^)I`nEp)liV[]1M<OP6r=zgbIguSebORD۫qu gZo~ٺlAplxpT0+[}`jzAV2Fi@qv֬5\|ʜ̭NleXdsjcs7f W+Ն7`g ȘJj|h(KD- dXiJ؇(x$( :;˹!
